After a reasonably good sleep, it was again a rooster 🐔, and Suuz, who woke us up around five. Once we got downstairs Suuz found two scorpions 🦂in the house. One was on the wall so we just left it there, but we covered the one on the floor with a glass until we were ready to leave. Most of our breakfast consisted of leftovers from yesterday’s breakfast since it was just a lot and we didn’t want to let it go to waste. Same old struggle as every day, food just doesn’t taste the same when you have to eat it, especially at 6:00am. After breakfast our morning ritual of packing the rest of the bags, applying sun lotion 🧴, butt cream, go pee twelve times, fill the water bottles and pack everything on the bike 🚲, started and ended when we said arriverdeci and left.
It was uphill right away, but we were not bothered. We cycled from vineyard to vineyard and from cute little village to cute little village. The green valleys, the green mountains, it was an absolute blast to cycle trough al that loveliness. We cycled on the Strada del Prosecco for maybe 15 to 20 kilometres. We passed the City of Wine and Mont Grappa. Instead of going on a tasting tour though, we had to make do with some grapes 🍇 instead. The only thing that was not really right is we couldn’t find a place to have an espresso. We wanted to stop in ‘prima hoor’ (or Premaor) but it wasn’t ’prima’ at al cause there was nothing there. All restaurants were closed, we only passed less than a handful, and there were no cafes either. Everyone seemed to be preoccupied with making wine, a very noble profession of course!
We did some grocery shopping 🛒for the day in Guia and continued towards Valdobbiadene where we hoped to find some good coffee. And finally we did. We stopped at one of the bars, had an espresso, a smoothie, and a tosti and watched a dude sneeze in his own shirt, greatness. At least he didn’t sneeze in our shirt.
From Valdobbiadene we had to cycle on a busy road with no shoulder for about seven kilometres. We took every opportunity to skip a piece by taking side roads, but in the end we still had to go on that thing. We thought we found a dirt path running in parallel, but it had a dead end so we had to cycle back. We just went for it. Eyes 👀 on the road, and for Suuz on her mirror, and cycle as fast as we could. Just before Feltre we could take a bike path. We were really grateful they put it there, but it started with a 15% incline. Not cool road folks, not cool. Must admit we were already happy to be off that busy road so we just laughed about it.
We saw quite some race bikes on the road today, most of them acknowledged us when we yell ‘buongiorno’ or ‘ciao’, but some just stare at us and or look straight ahead. Of course we look like dorks on these fully packed bikes, but we will be back on our cool race bikes soon and look who’s dorky then. Talking about dorky, we scared off a pack of donkeys 🐴🐴🐴just taking a stroll on the road. They were just walking there with the three of them casually ia-ing when we came flying down a hill, they were not happy and ran away.
We had lunch in Feltre. Bread 🍞with ham and a banana 🍌for Suuz and bread 🍞with cheese 🧀and grapes 🍇for the Mascle. And a cold drink and espresso ☕️for the both of us. It was not that hot and a bit cloudy ⛅️, real perfect bike weather, but a cold drink is always nice. Except when it’s cold, then I prefer a hot beverage.
Anyway, it was a nice break and it looked like there had been some Giro courses going through town according to all the bicycle inspired decorations on the streets. The road stayed nice and quiet after Feltre and the landscape was fascinating as well cycling on the foot of the Dolomites 🏔. We still had some climbing to do, but we had already covered most of our climbing in the morning hours. In the end we cycled a couple kilometres more than we expected and also climbed some more.
We arrived at the hotel just after two o’clock, parked our bikes, had some food on the patio outside our room, took a shower 🚿and jumped into bed for an afternoon nap. There is nothing to do or to see in Primolano so it is a perfect excuse to relax.
Which we did. We went down for dinner around seven but decided to go for a stroll around town first. Like I said, nothing to do here, but Mas gets restless when she is not moving for longer than an hour. After the little walk we sat down for dinner. It appeared we were the only ones there. The waiter had already set up a table for us right near the exit and in front of a noisy aquarium, so we went and sat down somewhere else. Dinner was what it was, nothing special and somehow we just expect a little more from Italians. Of course we had a glass or two of the local Prosecco. At least we thinks it is local, cause when we asked for a wine list they said: ‘we have white wine and red wine, sweet or dry’. We asked for Prosecco instead and assumed it’s from the region we cycled though all morning.
For dessert we had chocolate mousse. It was just gross. It tasted like cheap cream. Suuz agreed to help Mas finish her plate, in return Mas had to give her a massage later. Pretty shitty deal. Especially since it is her own fault her neck hurts cause Suuz cycles like a turtle 🐢, a one-sided one. Left shoulder close to the ear, like a turtle hiding his head in his shield. Anyway, Mas fixed it although giving massages is not part of her job. Even though almost everybody thinks that’s what a physiotherapist does. Until you go to see Mas. Enough about work, bedtime 😴. Another 80 kilometres towards Trento tomorrow!
